So I'm a little behind on blogging, but really that's good for you guys because in theory you'll get another blog post in a few days! Next week is my last in Delhi (what?!) so I thought I'd share pictures of my daily walk home from the program center and a visit to my favorite market.
The walk home:
| Piles of debris outside our program center with new construction in the background |
Along the main stretch of road we walk on there are always women shaping cow pies with their hands to dry in the sun...smells great.
| Cow pies on a bicycle |
| Auto rickshaw, delivery truck, goats, and a bed -- must be India! |
| Cow chillin' in the trash |
| More piles of debris/dirt near our house |
| Cycle rickshaws waiting for their next victim |
| Small boy pushing heavy cart of water |
| Almost home... |
| Our neighbors! |
| And there's our building (light pink) at the end of the lane (which is looking exceptionally clean here...) |
And now a trip to Lajpat Nagar, a huge bustling market about seven metro stops from our house. These pictures are from the time our host family took us shopping. We thought they would just show us their favorite places but they ended up buying Caroline and I each a new fancy 'suit' to wear at an upcoming wedding. (I'm going to an Indian wedding!!) We then of course had to get matching bangles, and they insisted on buying bangles for our mothers and sisters too. Talk about generosity!
| Bangle shop! |
| Blue bangles for Rachel (obviously), green for mom, and the multi colored set matches my wedding outfit! |
| Jewelry |
| Kurta stand |
| Someone getting henna! |
| Favorite place to get a lassi--looks clean huh?! |
I'm currently obsessed with lassi's, and they are so easy to make! It's just ice, yoghurt, milk, and lots of sugar, (you can add fruit like banana or mango too) blended together. So yummy and refreshing in this heat.

| My wedding 'suit!' |
My host sister and father are insisting on taking us shopping again this week to get shoes to complete our wedding looks. Get excited for wedding pictures in a few weeks!
After this week I'll be heading to Dehradun (North near the Himalayas) for my independent study project for four weeks. I'm definitely sad to be leaving Delhi so soon because I didn't get to see everything I would've liked to, but I'm really excited to get to the mountains and escape the coming summer heat! (This Seattleite has some serious issues adjusting to heat). Which reminds me, we just got AC in our room today! Hallelujah.
Hope everyone is happy and healthy!
love,
katie
